Disordered eating vs Eating Disorders
Disordered Eating
- Refers to unhealthy eating behaviors and concerns about body image, often driven by societal pressure to lose weight or maintain a certain physique
- Common examples include:
- Dieting and restrictive eating
- Self-induced vomiting, binge eating, and laxative abuse (less frequent but still part of the spectrum)
- Can be a normal response to societal pressures, but it can also be a precursor to developing an eating disorder
Eating Disorder
- A clinical diagnosis characterized by severe and persistent disturbances in eating behavior, body image, and weight
- Examples include:
- Anorexia Nervosa (AN)
- Bulimia Nervosa (BN)
- Binge Eating Disorder (BED)
- Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED)
- Requires professional treatment and support to address the underlying psychological and emotional issues
